:《BYD Fires the First Shot to Conquer Japanese Auto Market》
As Chinese automakers expand globally, most have chosen markets such as Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Only two major markets remain largely untouched: the closed North American market and Japan, long dominated by Toyota. Yet BYD has ventured into Japan on its own.
In Japan's unique right-hand-drive market, BYD has sold around 500 commercial vehicles and 7,123 new energy passenger vehicles to date. As the company marks its 20th year in Japan, BYD is launching a dual strategy of pure EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs).
The Sealion 06 DM-i will be its first PHEV model for Japan, while the RACCO, a pure electric K-Car, has been specially designed for Japanese consumers. BYD plans to offer 7–8 EV and hybrid models in Japan by 2027.
At the Tokyo Motor Show (Japan Mobility Show), BYD made a high-profile announcement of its entry into the hybrid and microcar markets — long seen as Japan's strongholds. The move sent shockwaves through the Japanese auto industry, signaling that the influence of Chinese new energy vehicles (NEVs) has now reached even Japan's traditionally closed market.
