Football (soccer) as a lower-class game
1592年,莎士比亚在《The comedy of error》中运用足球来描述剧中角色的抱怨:“难道我就是个圆圆的皮球,给你们踢来踢去吗?/你把我一脚踢出去,他把我一脚踢回来/你们要我这皮球不破,还得替我补上一块厚厚的皮哩。”
翻翻莎翁及同时代的英国剧本,经常以“你这个下贱的踢足球的”来形容地位卑微的奴仆或是品行恶劣的人。尤以《李尔王》中,肯特伯爵的奚落最为大众熟知(King Lear Act 1, Scene 4)。
LEAR:“My lady’s father”? My lord’s knave(流氓), your whoreson dog! You slave, you cur(狗杂种)!
OSWALD :I am none of these, my lord. I beseech your pardon.
LEAR:Do you bandy looks with me, you rascal? (he strikes OSWALD)
OSWALD:I’ll not be strucken, my lord.
KENT:(tripping OSWALD) Nor tripped neither, you base football player. “也不能被人踢吧,你这下贱的踢足球的!”
